Tatars: Protectors of Lithuania

Request for price

As time passed and Lithuania grew, the power of it’s leaders grew too. Facing with more and more dangers all around, Great dukes of Lithuania needed soldiers who could protect them. Resulting in this, in early 1397 Khan Tohtamysh together with his wife, sons (his eldest son Gelaledin helped Vytautas in the Battle of Grunwald in 1410), other relatives and loyal soldiers arrived in Lithuania. Vytautas settled Tohtamysh near Vilnius and rewarded him with lands. This settlement started what is now considered – the biggest Lithuanian Tatars community at Nemežis. And now we are inviting to meet them!

Description

You may wonder who are Tatars. Their name originated from Turkic and Mongol tribes, that came in Europe during V-IX centuries. Most Tatars are Muslims. The first Tatar settlers came to Lithuania around XIII – XIV century, the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL), where rulers maintained close relations with the Golden Horde or Kipchak Destin – state of the Turkic and Mongol tribes united by the great Mongol military leader Genghis Khan’s grandson Batu Khan. By having this strong bond between two nations Tatars for a long time helped Lithuanians to protect borders from outside forces.

Due to such an historical importance, we welcome all you to discover this amazing community! But that’s not all, because during this trip we will visit Medininkų castle that is located really close to Belarus border.

Medininkai Castle consists of 4 towers and up to 15 m tall walls, and defensive ditch. Castle was built around the first half of the 14th century under the rule of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas (1316-1341). The castle was one of the defensive fortifications for the Lithuanian state with its capital city Vilnius against the aggression of Crusaders and Livonian order, and potential attacks from the East.
